Surgical/Scrub Tech PRN

Monday-Friday, hours vary according to surgery schedule.
Must have at least 6 months of surgical/scrub tech experience.
SUMMARY
Perform Surgical Technician duties. Assist in patient cares and related services in the Surgery Suite, under the guidance of the Circulating Nurse and Outpatient Services Manager. Prepares supplies and equipment for use in surgery. Apply principles of asepsis and sterile technique.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.
- Plan for and prepare necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge and technical skill in the care and use of instruments, supplies, and equipment used during a surgical procedure.
- Assist in positioning and draping the patient for the appropriate procedure.
- Properly identify and handle medication passed onto the sterile field.
- Perform ‘scrub duties’ such as handling instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and maintaining a sterile field.
- Ensure proper care of specimens for surgical procedures.
- Clean and maintain instruments stored in the Surgery Department.
- Perform all work in accordance with standards of sanitation, safety, and proper handling techniques, including sterilization and high level disinfecting procedures.
- Develop and maintain effective communication with patients, medical staff, and personnel.
- Assist in the orientation of new personnel.
- Practices aseptic and sterile techniques in all required situations to maintain infection control guidelines.
- Maintain the ordering and stocking of OR and sterile processing supplies
- Contact surgical and equipment reps as appropriate.
- Clean and reprocess instruments, including instrument sets, scopes, and loaner sets as needed, following instructions for use (IFU).
- Monitors inventory and condition of surgical sets and corrects if necessary.
- Verifies operating condition of SPD equipment using efficacy monitoring tests and devices.
- Maintains a high standard of cleanliness in the entire work area.
- Knowledge of sonic, washer, Steris 1E and Steris steam sterilization techniques.
- General instrument knowledge, able to take apart instruments to clean and reprocess, and able to put them back together as needed.
- Notifies Outpatient Services Manager in the event that equipment malfunctions or instruments are in disrepair.
- Notifies Outpatient Services Manager in the event that climate or other conditions of sterilization fall outside of AORN or AAMI standards.
- ANSI/AAMI ST79 standards will be followed, along with manufacturer recommended IFU’s for reprocessing of all instruments used in surgery.
- Participate in all safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.
- Uphold confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times and report violations to the Privacy Officer.
- Understand and comply with the requirements of the Saunders Medical Center’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, all Saunders Medical Center-wide policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.
- Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by Saunders Medical Center policy and as requested by the Supervisor.

- Other duties as assigned by the Outpatient Services Manager.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises product representatives and observers in the Surgery Suite.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Previous surgical experience required
Surgical Tech license
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.
- Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must be able to read, write and follow written and oral instructions and possess positive skills in communication. Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, visitors, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate at the level necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram or schedule form.
