MS Clinic Registered Nurse (RN) 

Under the direction of the MS and Migraine Clinic Manager and according to established policies and procedures, the RN performs the functions of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the care of all assigned patients in the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Migraine Specialty Clinic. The position requires a high level of organization, attention to detail, and high level of accountability.  The RN will be accountable to the MS and Migraine Clinic Manager, Director of Nursing, the MS APRN, and the patient and family.

  • Assess and organize patient data as directed by the MS APRN.
  • Prioritize, plan, provide direct patient care, and follow-up with specialty clinic patients. 
  • Communicate with insurance companies to obtain prior authorization for various tests, procedures, and medications.
  • Use communication and interpersonal skills to provide care to specialty clinic patients and their families.
  • Relay pertinent information through appropriate documentation and referral to other health team members. 
  • Maintain quality patient care following professional standards and administrative, nursing, and department policies and procedures. 
  • Initiate, implement, evaluate and revise patient teaching plans as needed to meet the patient’s learning needs.
  • Provide an environment conducive to professional practice.
  • Participate in department related and hospital wide committees, activities, in-services and education.
  • Assimilate new clinical knowledge and skills gained from conferences, workshops, seminars, and professional literature into practice.  
  • Work with various vendors to stay up to date on the latest equipment and medications related to MS.  Assist in managing sample medications that are on had are not expired and counted correctly.
  • Meet physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the patient.
  • Respect the patient as an individual, identifying cultural needs and utilizing them. 
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times, both interdepartmentally and externally.
  • See that supplies are ordered from Purchasing as needed for the MS Specialty Clinic and approved by the Outpatient Services Manager.  Make sure in stock materials are in good working condition and within the expiration period.
  • Maintain any standing orders and have them approved at the Medical Staff meeting annually.
  • Work with all departments of SMC to provide coordinated care and an excellent patient experience.
  • Assist clinical areas (hospital, specialty clinic, treatment room and the rural health clinic) as needed.
  • Participate in Quality Management initiatives, including quality projects specific to the MS Specialty Clinic.
  • Practice the proper fire, safety and disaster procedures as set forth by SMC.
  • Participate in all quality, safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.
  • Uphold confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times and report violations to the Privacy Officer.
  • Understand and comply with the requirements of the Saunders Medical Center’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, all Saunders Medical Center-wide policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.
  • Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by Saunders Medical Center policy and as requested by the Supervisor.
  • Demonstrate personal traits of a high-level commitment, motivation and energy; team orientation; professionalism; trust; personal honesty and integrity; and a demonstration of placing others in a place of high value and treating them with dignity and respect.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
  • Graduated from an accredited RN nursing program.
  • Three years of experience in nursing required.
  • Computer skills proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Certificates Licenses, Registrations
  • Registered Nurse in the state of Nebraska.
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Multiple Sclerosis Certified Nurse preferred after working in MS at least 2 years.
Language Skills
  • Must be able to read, write and follow written and oral instructions and possess positive skills in communication.  Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, visitors, and the general public. 
  • Understand technical information from Supervisors, charts, reference books, manuals, and labels.
  • Possesses analytical skills necessary to organize workload according to patient priorities.  
Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate at the level necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must sit frequently, spend long periods of time examining documents, and communicating long periods of time over the telephone.  The employee must stand, reach with arms and hands and occasionally lift, push or pull 50 pounds.  The employee must occasionally walk and climb or balance.  The employee must have the ability to properly transfer a patient from chair to exam table/bed.
