SUMMARY Under the direction of the Outpatient Services Manager and according to established policies and procedures, the Surgical Staff Nurse and Treatment Room Coordinator performs the functions of assessment, planning, implementation, scheduling, evaluation of the care off all assigned patients in the Treatment Room, Surgical and PACU areas. The Registered Nurse will report to the Outpatient Services Manager, Director of Nursing.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. 

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.  Staff nurse shall:
  • Assess and organize patient data to develop a plan of care and discharge plan.
  • Prioritize, plan, and provide direct patient care to assigned patients during pre-operative, intra-operative, recovery, and immediate post-operative phases.
  • Use communication and interpersonal skills to provide care to surgical and treatment room patients and their families. Relay pertinent information through appropriate documentation and referral to other health team members.
  • Work regularly and provide good communication with multi-department personnel.
  • Schedule surgeries, treatment rooms and Treatment Room Follow up appointments using the EMR system.
  • Maintain treatment room orders and schedule and communicate accordingly.
  • Reach out to other facilities to obtain pertinent patient information in regards to treatment rooms and surgeries.
  • Maintain quality patient care following professional standards and administrative, nursing, and department policies and procedures.
  • Initiate, implement, evaluate and revise patient teaching plans as needed to meet the patient’s learning needs.
  • Provide an environment conducive to professional practice in part by functioning as a role model and resource person.
  • Participate in department related and hospital wide committees, activities, in-services and education.
  • Assimilate new clinical knowledge and skills gained from conferences, workshops, seminars, and professional literature into practice. 
  • Operate all equipment in Pre-op, Surgery, PACU, Specialty Clinics, and as needed in ER and Medical-Surgical units with minimal assistance. 
  • Work quickly and efficiently in an emergency.
  • Meet physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the patient.
  • Respect the patient as an individual, identifying cultural needs and utilizing them.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times, both interdepartmentally and externally.
  • Participate in all safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.
  • Uphold confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times and report violations to the Privacy Officer.
  • Understand and comply with the requirements of the Saunders Medical Center’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, all Saunders Medical Center-wide policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.
  • Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by Saunders Medical Center policy and as requested by the Supervisor.
  • Demonstrate personal traits of a high-level commitment, motivation and energy; team orientation; professionalism; trust; personal honesty and integrity; and a demonstration of placing others in a place of high value and treating them with dignity and respect.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Outpatient Services.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Operating Room and PACU experience preferred, but will educate and cross-train as needed.
  • Participates/attends educational conferences; updates and maintains professional knowledge and skills related to areas of practice.
  • Attends departmental and staff meetings on a regular basis.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification (PALS) required within the first year of employment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS  

  • Must be able to read, write and follow written and oral instructions and possess positive skills in communication.  Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, visitors, and the general public.
  • Understand technical information from Supervisors, charts, reference books, manuals, and labels.
  • Possesses analytical skills necessary to organize workload according to patient priorities.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate at the level necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 

REASONING ABILITY Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram or schedule form.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to lift 100 pounds rarely and 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to properly position and transport patients.
  • Ability to maintain stationary standing position for 4 hours rarely and 3 hours occasionally.
  • Ability to stabilize unsteady patient when ambulating.

  • Hospital environment with minimal exposure to excessive noise and temperature changes.
  • Exposure to some anesthetic gases and fluorescent lighting.
